Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) has welcomed the recognition and established of a dedicated ministry for the tourism sector of the economy, describing the development as ‘a proactive move to leverage the country’s tourism potential and foster economic growth.’

It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu, Wednesday evening, unveiled his new ministers following their confirmation by the senate, last week.

The Senate last Monday, August 7, confirmed 45 ministerial nominees out of the 48 nominees forwarded to it by President Tinubu.

The confirmation followed the consideration and approval of the nominees during the Monday plenary.

From the commencement and conclusion of the screening exercise at the senate, tourism operators and other stakeholders alike had mounted a media siege to the Federal Government calling for a separate ministry of Tourism in order for the sector to fully actualise its full potential and economic contribution to the growth for the country’s economic growth.

Highlight of the Wednesday’s unveiling came in the appointment of a new Minister of Tourism, a development which followed intensive clamouring in the country following the neglect of the sub- sector of the economy for decades by subsequent administrations.

Reacting, Thursday, to the announcement of members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet which included the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Tourism and subsequent appointment of Ms Lola Ade-John as the Minister of Tourism, NATOP in a statement signed by its President, Mrs Ime Udo, hailed the decision as ‘welcome development,’ and prayers of industry players answered.’

NATOP said it is ‘now evident that government listens’ following the creation of stand-alone Ministry of Tourism by the President Tinubu administration, noting further that Nigeria with a rich cultural heritage and several natural attractions, ‘a dedicated ministry will help in harnessing these potential more effectively.’

According to NATOP, Nigeria has been trying to diversify its economy away from oil, and tourism is one sector that can contribute significantly to the GDP if properly managed.

NATOP President, Mrs Udo continued in the statement as she posited that ‘as a sector that has the potential to create numerous direct and indirect jobs, this will help to boost employment opportunities and provide more focused leadership, resources, and attention needed to develop the tourism industry.’ “It can ensure that Nigeria’s tourism potential are effectively marketed on international platforms, attracting foreign tourists and investments and it will be in a better position to formulate and implement policies that are tailored to the specific needs of the tourism industry,” the NATOP chief said.

For the industry operators, Udo further expressed the belief that the establishment of a stand-alone ministry could mean more resources and better regulation.

“There is a potential for increased funding and resources directed at developing the industry, and it will benefit from more coherent policies and regulations that are specifically designed for its growth and sustainability.

“This will also mean increased collaboration, where it can better liaise with other government agencies, international bodies, and private stakeholders to drive the tourism agenda. Very importantly is Improved Image and Branding. With dedicated efforts, Nigeria’s image as a tourist destination could improve, attracting more visitors and investments.

“Not forgetting, capacity building, which is very deficient currently. It will be a great opportunity to organize training and capacity-building programs for stakeholders in the industry, raising the standard of service delivery.

“Thus, a stand-alone Ministry of Tourism is a proactive move to leverage the country’s tourism potential and foster economic growth,” Udo said.

While exploring the possibilities in the choice of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) expert as Tourism minister by the government, the NATOP President said Ms Ade-John’s background presents numerous intriguing positives for the sector.

“Her expertise can drive the digital transformation of Nigeria’s tourism sector. From online ticketing systems to virtual tours of historical sites, the possibilities are vast.

“The development and promotion of e-tourism platforms can provide a seamless experience for tourists. Such platforms could include online visa applications, digital city guides, and easy online booking for accommodations and attractions.

“It is certain that she would understand the importance of data, which will lead to better-informed decisions based on tourism trends, visitor preferences, and feedback. Leveraging technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) can help develop “smart tourist destinations.”

“For instance, smart signage provides real-time information or smart bracelets for tourists that offer guided tours and ensure safety.

“Being in a technological age, historical sites and museums could be enhanced with AR and VR technology, providing interactive experiences and bringing Nigeria’s rich history to life: An understanding of the digital realm ensures effective marketing campaigns. Social media, influencer partnerships, and targeted online advertising can help showcase Nigeria’s tourist attractions to a global audience,” NATOP president stressed.

Continuing, Udo noted that based on the level of tech startup ecosystem which she described as ‘budding,’ the new Tourism minister ‘can foster partnerships with tech startups to develop innovative solutions for the tourism industry.’

“With the integration of technology, efforts can be made to make tourism more sustainable. For instance, using data to manage crowd sizes at popular sites to ensure they aren’t overwhelmed.

“In essence, the Minister of Tourism in Nigeria with an IT background can combine the traditional allure of the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage with the modern conveniences and innovations of technology, creating a unique and enhanced tourist experience.

“I believe this is very welcomed and a game changer for the tourism industry and indeed the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP).

The NATOP President, therefore, congratulated Ade-John on her appointment, saying; ‘as an association, we send our congratulations to the new minister and wish her the best throughout her tenure.’
