Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Segun Runsewe in a group photograph with the Olujumu of Ijumu kingdom, Oba Williams Olusegun Ayeni, with wife and the rest of his entourage during their courtesy visit to Nigeria Culture House in Abuja

Otunba Runsewe said this when he received in audience a delegation from Ijumu, in Kogi State led by His Royal Majesty, Oba Williams Olusegun Ayeni, the Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom which paid him a courtesy visit at the Nigerian Culture House.

Runsewe noted that as the primary custodian of culture and tradition, the traditional rulers play a very vital role of maintaining peace in their various communities, adding further that the traditional institution ‘is the closest to the grassroots which makes it possible for the traditional rulers to easily detect trouble spots and violence and curb them from escalation.’

“For the rate of crime and criminality, youth restiveness to take a downward turn in our society, the traditional institutions should be recognized and assigned constitutional roles of chief security officers of their various domains,” Otunba Runsewe said.

The NCAC Director General further revealed that the high rate of crime and criminality in various parts of the country stem from the fast eroding norms, culture and tradition of our people.

He opined that as primary custodians of our various traditions and Culture, the traditional rulers will make our traditional institutions a veritable springboard for cultural reorientation for our teeming youths who have gone under the wild influence of westernization.

Speaking earlier, leader of the delegation, His Royal Majesty, Oba Williams Olusegun Ayeni, Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom expressed profound gratitude for the warm hospitality accorded him and members of his entourage.

His Royal Majesty said before the advent of Christianity in Ijumu kingdom, tradition and Culture played key roles in the administration of the Kingdom but regrets that most of the beliefs, customs and traditions of the people of his kingdom have been lost.

Oba Ayeni maintained that on his ascension to the throne of his fore fathers, the need to reintroduce the lost culture and traditions of the people came to the front burner.

The monarch told Runsewe that ‘as the Icon and Ambassador of the Nigerian Culture,’ his delegation was in his office to inform and officially invite him to the first-ever Indigenous Ijumu Cultural Festival coming up on November 4, at the Ojumu Palace, Iyara in Kogi State.

The Director General thanked the delegation for the visit which, according to him, is accompanied with royal blessings and assured His Royal Majesty of the Council’s support to make the festival very remarkable.

It would be noted that Oba Ayeni is the first royal father to visit the Nigerian Culture House.

‘Bring your vast experience to bear in running new Tourism ministry,’ ITPN tasks Ade-John

0

National President of the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN), Chief Abiodun Odusanwo, has tasked the newly-appointed Ministry of Tourism, Ms Lola Ade-John to bring her vast and wealth of experience in the ICT, banking and resource management fields to bear in administering the new Ministry of Tourism.

Ms Lola Ade-John, the new Minister of Tourism

The ITPN boss, while congratulating President Bola Tinubu for establishing the Ministry of Tourism after years of clamouring by stakeholders and operators alike, also urged the new minister, Ms Ade-John, to ‘see her appointment as a clarion call to grow and develop the country’s tourism resources via the creative application of modern technology which is capable of generating great revenue, creating job opportunities, fighting poverty and revamping the ailing national economy.’

According to Odusanwo, ‘while the private sector operators are the orchestra in their respective fields of callings, government remains the conductor providing the sense of vision, coordinating competitive marketing intelligence, the executional insights and the ability to bring members of the orchestra together to achieve the desired national goals that the tourism industry stands to offer.’

Reacting to Wednesday’s unveiling of the new cabinet by President Tinubu in which the Ministry of Tourism was announced, the ITPN chief, in a personally signed statement, Thursday, expressed gratitude to the government for ‘heeding to the calls and aspirations of the Nigerian tourism community in the establishment of a stand-alone Tourism Ministry for the country.’

Odusanwo stressed that the decision remains ‘a very key and strategic move by the government to embrace tourism as a key driver of socio-economic growth of the country.’

While noting that ‘Nigeria is greatly endowed with huge tourism potentials waiting to be tapped,’ Odusanwo disclosed that  industry players and critical stakeholders in the sector now ‘look up to the minister to run the affairs of the ministry with that ‘orchestra-conductor’ relationship with the objective of re-positioning the ministry as a viable government body for purposeful leadership guidance and direction, functional policy formulations, and implementable high-tech solutions that will create the enabling environment for operators of the industry at both public and private sector levels to thrive.’

“The call for a stand-alone tourism ministry has been on for a very long time now, but coming to the rescue with the creation of the Tourism Ministry by the administration of President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, it is hoped that the Renewed Hope Agenda of his Government will truly breathe a renewed hope in the Nigerian tourism industry for better performance in the nation’s socio-economic facet,” the ITPN President stressed.

He assured that the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria ‘as the nation’s premier professional awarding body in tourism, hospitality and related trades, will continue to ensure high level of competent professional practices in the industry as well as put in check the wanton and unwholesome infiltration and practices of quacks within the professional folds of the industry.’

Odusanwo, however,  rallied ‘all critical stakeholders and key players in the industry to instill professional competence in their operations and diligently support the new Minister in the successful administration of the ministry that will ensure better results and greater outcome for the industry and for the good of the country.’

NATOP welcomes new Tourism ministry, says appointment of Ade-John ‘game changer for industry’

0
Ms Lola Ade-John

Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) has welcomed the recognition and established of a dedicated ministry for the tourism sector of the economy, describing the development as ‘a proactive move to leverage the country’s tourism potential and foster economic growth.’

Ms Lola Ade-John

It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu, Wednesday evening, unveiled his new ministers following their confirmation by the senate, last week.

The Senate last Monday, August 7, confirmed 45 ministerial nominees out of the 48 nominees forwarded to it by President Tinubu.

The confirmation followed the consideration and approval of the nominees during the Monday plenary.

From the commencement and conclusion of the screening exercise at the senate, tourism operators and other stakeholders alike had mounted a media siege to the Federal Government calling for a separate ministry of Tourism in order for the sector to fully actualise its full potential and economic contribution to the growth for the country’s economic growth.

Highlight of the Wednesday’s unveiling came in the appointment of a new Minister of Tourism, a development which followed intensive clamouring in the country following the neglect of the sub- sector of the economy for decades by subsequent administrations.

Reacting, Thursday, to the announcement of members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet which included the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Tourism and subsequent appointment of Ms Lola Ade-John as the Minister of Tourism, NATOP in a statement signed by its President, Mrs Ime Udo, hailed the decision as ‘welcome development,’ and prayers of industry players answered.’

NATOP said it is ‘now evident that government listens’ following the creation of stand-alone Ministry of Tourism by the President Tinubu administration, noting further that Nigeria with a rich cultural heritage and several natural attractions, ‘a dedicated ministry will help in harnessing these potential more effectively.’

According to NATOP, Nigeria has been trying to diversify its economy away from oil, and tourism is one sector that can contribute significantly to the GDP if properly managed.

NATOP President, Ime Udo delivering her welcome address during the AGM in Ekiti, last Friday, July 14

NATOP President, Mrs Udo continued in the statement as she posited that ‘as a sector that has the potential to create numerous direct and indirect jobs, this will help to boost employment opportunities and provide more focused leadership, resources, and attention needed to develop the tourism industry.’ “It can ensure that Nigeria’s tourism potential are effectively marketed on international platforms, attracting foreign tourists and investments and it will be in a better position to formulate and implement policies that are tailored to the specific needs of the tourism industry,” the NATOP chief said.

For the industry operators, Udo further expressed the belief that the establishment of a stand-alone ministry could mean more resources and better regulation.

“There is a potential for increased funding and resources directed at developing the industry, and it will benefit from more coherent policies and regulations that are specifically designed for its growth and sustainability.

“This will also mean increased collaboration, where it can better liaise with other government agencies, international bodies, and private stakeholders to drive the tourism agenda. Very importantly is Improved Image and Branding. With dedicated efforts, Nigeria’s image as a tourist destination could improve, attracting more visitors and investments.

“Not forgetting, capacity building, which is very deficient currently. It will be a great opportunity to organize training and capacity-building programs for stakeholders in the industry, raising the standard of service delivery.

“Thus, a stand-alone Ministry of Tourism is a proactive move to leverage the country’s tourism potential and foster economic growth,” Udo said.

While exploring the possibilities in the choice of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) expert as Tourism minister by the government, the NATOP President said Ms Ade-John’s background presents numerous intriguing positives for the sector.

“Her expertise can drive the digital transformation of Nigeria’s tourism sector. From online ticketing systems to virtual tours of historical sites, the possibilities are vast.

“The development and promotion of e-tourism platforms can provide a seamless experience for tourists. Such platforms could include online visa applications, digital city guides, and easy online booking for accommodations and attractions.

“It is certain that she would understand the importance of data, which will lead to better-informed decisions based on tourism trends, visitor preferences, and feedback. Leveraging technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) can help develop “smart tourist destinations.”

“For instance, smart signage provides real-time information or smart bracelets for tourists that offer guided tours and ensure safety.

“Being in a technological age, historical sites and museums could be enhanced with AR and VR technology, providing interactive experiences and bringing Nigeria’s rich history to life: An understanding of the digital realm ensures effective marketing campaigns. Social media, influencer partnerships, and targeted online advertising can help showcase Nigeria’s tourist attractions to a global audience,” NATOP president stressed.

Continuing, Udo noted that based on the level of tech startup ecosystem which she described as ‘budding,’ the new Tourism minister ‘can foster partnerships with tech startups to develop innovative solutions for the tourism industry.’

“With the integration of technology, efforts can be made to make tourism more sustainable. For instance, using data to manage crowd sizes at popular sites to ensure they aren’t overwhelmed.

“In essence, the Minister of Tourism in Nigeria with an IT background can combine the traditional allure of the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage with the modern conveniences and innovations of technology, creating a unique and enhanced tourist experience.

“I believe this is very welcomed and a game changer for the tourism industry and indeed the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP).

The NATOP President, therefore, congratulated Ade-John on her appointment, saying; ‘as an association, we send our congratulations to the new minister and wish her the best throughout her tenure.’

On Your Mark! Set! Lola Ade-John, Go!!!

Ms Lola Ade-John

By Frank Meke

Great news, ehn? President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done it, unbelievably, and in the best fine moment for an industry so abused and unappreciated.

Ms Lola Ade-John

We prayed, “Yes, we did” If there is a man, a people who can pray, then there is God who can answer prayers. Tinubu brought back to us, to Nigeria, a well deserved stand alone Ministry of Tourism. Great opportunity, long lost but restored. “Emi lokun,” the President’ famed prayer confession, touched the us in such significant manifestation.

It is the turn and time of tourism in Nigeria, and may God bless our hearts’ desire, keep our president, and prosper our nation and people.

Lola Ade John should be the most popular Nigerian ever. It is because she is the new face of Nigerian tourism. The race is going to swift, and there will be no captives.

Swift reforms, yes, all the cobwebs, the lies and misappropriation, and misapplication of tourism opportunities must be thrown overboard. No long speeches, no yeye dinner dates, it is going to be hard work, lots of catching up to do.

Nigeria tourism certainly lags behind.  Lola Ade John must sprint like a gazelle, another Mary Onyeali, remember that our Olympic sprint star?

Yes, this is our year of tourism Olympics, and there will be no balm for emotional and sentimental persuasions. Lola Ade John is our hope for the tourism Olympic gold medal. It won’t be farlon, we pray.

We must start afresh. Seek and head hunt best legs and brains. Our problem is the overrated and egocentric civil servants. They are the kill joy of our tourism and Lola. Ade John must be careful. She must watch out for their Greek gifts and welcome reception. They are notoriously evil.

As a certified information technology expert, Lola Ade John must come to the tourism table with Intel backed solutions and, in particular, a support team with strategic delivery plans.

To fail would be dire, as the expectations are huge. Our tourism experiences and expectations are no longer dreams. It must be practical, visible, collaborative, effective, profitable, and beneficial to every Nigerian.

Tourism is our badge of honour, the heartbeat of our new economy, the unemployment buster, and our passport to global acceptation and visitation. Surely, tourism will bring about peace in our land.

Lola Ade John must sprint to tourism gold in a hundred days and must rejig government tourism agencies, presently funnelled in confusion and poor mandate deliveries. I hate with perfect hatred their worn-out deceptive statistics. They have stolen us blind. It is a one day at a time, goal for the new Ministry of Tourism.

I took a count, fifty calls in twenty minutes. Yes, from industry players and media colleagues. Some expressively joyful, others in wonder on what to come. President, Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Mr Nkereweum Onung described the President’s response as heartwarming, grateful to a leader who listens.

His open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is cheering, inspiring, and thoughtful. It is the fastest letter of appreciation in our industry history, made public, barely five minutes after  the office of the President’s media adviser,  broke the news.

It was an Olympic response. The industry is agog. Nkereweum onung salutes the industry stakeholders,  everyone, and everybody who took to individual efforts to drive the campaign for a stand-alone Ministry of Tourism.

It is in the bag now. Yes, the stand-alone Ministry of Tourism is in the bag. The rebuilding and restructuring must start in essence. We now have an address, and we won’t forget Mr. President Ahmed Tinubu.  He kept us in dark all along but heard our stringent calls for our “Lokan” (our turn) tourism ministry.

In the same vein, we welcome the ministry of arts, culture, and creative economy. Hannatu Musa Musawa, sure, must tie her wrapper well for a tough dance through the culture space. She can sprint faster with culture.

Hannatu has a game changer in culture in the National Council of Arts and Culture, pivoted to limelight by Segun Runsewe. The national troupe is on a resurrection and resurgence under Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed. In the cultural orientation agency, Hannatu Musa Musawa can make a hundred meter dash victory with Comrade Ado Yahuza.

I’m beginning to think that President Bola Ahmed knew all along what and where he wants of our tourism and culture economy to be.

No encumbrances, just freehold opportunities to gain from the huge cultural tourism economy and make Nigeria the preferred tourism destination in Africa.

If only Festus keyamo as Minister of Aviation could  give us a true Nigerian airline and stop the rascality and overbearing exploitation of Nigerians by foreign airlines,  then we could begin to pride our place among nations.

Let me stay action here and watch Lola Ade John sprint into action. She must be strong on baton exchange in collaboration with the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria.  Congratulations to us all, and thank you, Mr. President, thank you, sir.

President Bola Tinubu

Umbrella body of industry operators and other stakeholders in the country, the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), has hailed President Bola Tinubu for establishing a dedicated ministry for the tourism sub-sector of the economy ‘after many years of advocacy.’

Pres. Bola Tinubu

FTAN also commended President Tinubu for ‘heeding the collective voice of the industry and recognizing the immense potential that lies within the tourism sector’ in creating a separate ministry for it in his new cabinet.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State

Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Eno had, last month, appointed Mr Onung as SSA on Tourism, alongside another FTAN chieftain, Mrs Ime Udo, in what has been described as representing ‘a milestone in the history of the umbrella body of tourism practitioners in the country.’

Onunu who doubles as the President of FTAN, and operator of Remlord Travels, a tour company based in Calabar, Cross River State, was at the 26th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the group, on July 20 in Abuja, also re-elected unopposed for a second term in office.

Congratulating Onung on the appointment, the Akwa Ibom chapter, in a statement, Monday, further hailed the FTAN president on his ‘unanimous re-election for another term.’

In the statement signed by Mr Joseph Umoh, the State Chapter Coordinator, while wishing Onung ‘a successful tenure in office,’ further assured of the Akwa Ibom tourism operators’  ‘total support and ready partnership’ with his administration at the national body.

Mr. Umoh also expressed the backing for Onung to drive the State Governor’s ‘ARISE agenda objectives to make Akwa Ibom State a world class tourism destination.’

“On behalf of the Executive Committee, the various tourism associations and members of the State Chapter of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria – FTAN, we most heartily congratulate you on the successful hosting of the 26th Annual General meeting (AGM) of our association held recently in Abuja, and your unanimous re-election for another term as the national President of FTAN.

“We also congratulate you, with great pride on your recent appointment as the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the governor of Akwa Ibom State on Culture & Tourism.

“We wish you a most successful tenure and further assure you of our total support and ready partnership as you steer the ship of FTAN; and in support of His Excellency’s ARISE agenda objectives to make Akwa Ibom State a world class tourism destination.

“Once again, please accept our congratulations on your well-deserved re-election and appointment,” read he statement by Umoh.

FTAN President, Mr Nkereuwem Onung

It would be recalled that, last Thursday, July 20, at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, in Abuja, during the AGM of FTAN, which held under the theme of; ‘Tourism Today and Tomorrow: Setting the Agenda for the New Administration,’ the Akwa Ibom Governor, Eno, formally unveiled his ARISE agenda in the state, with a call to the Federal Government to review the National Policy on Tourism in order for operators to realize and mine the enormous potential in the sector.

Governor Eno’s ARISE agenda seeks to grow the Akwa Ibom tourism industry through; an enhanced infrastructure base which entails significant investments in upgrading and developing tourism infrastructure in the stat. Others are:

‘Sustainable Tourism Initiatives: By implementing eco-friendly measures, conserving natural resources, and protecting the region’s rich biodiversity, its stunning landscapes and unique ecosystems will be preserved for generations to come.

“Cultural Heritage Preservation: Akwa Ibom State boasts a wealth of cultural treasures waiting to be discovered.

“Destination Marketing and Promotion: Through strategic campaigns, collaborations with travel influencers, and participation in international tourism events, Akwa Ibom can be positioned as a must-visit destination, capturing the attention of travelers from around the globe.

“Community Involvement and Empowerment: By engaging local communities in the tourism sector, providing training and opportunities for entrepreneurship, and supporting local businesses, AKS can create a sustainable tourism ecosystem that benefits the people,” the state government said.

According to Eno, ‘with the ARISE agenda, Akwa Ibom State is poised to become a premier tourism destination, offering breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and unforgettable experiences.’

Speaking as Special Guest during the 26th AGM FTAN, Governor Eno noted that a review of the country’s National Policy on Tourism would engender growth and fasttrack infrastructure development ‘needed for operators and stakeholders alike to reap bountifully from the sector.’

Eno, who was represented by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, further posited that amendment of existing tourism laws must be accelerated for sporadic development in the sector.
